Magnum Systems has established itself as a leader in the material handling industry, backed by a legacy of over 60 years. In the most recent podcast conversation with Mike Abare, Bill Mead, the company's Chief Financial Officer, unfolded the story of Magnum’s evolution, current state and future vision.
Bill Mead has spent the last three decades working within private companies that manufacture various goods. His experience spans from high-volume, low-value, repetitive manufacturing operations to low-volume, high-value, custom-engineered environments. Over the last 18 years, he has been involved in the material handling business, specifically in areas such as container handling equipment and bulk material storage equipment. He brings his extensive experience in the bulk material movement business to Magnum Systems and now guides the company in its pursuit of excellence in the bulk material movement business.
“I followed kind of a traditional career path for people who do what I do,” says Bill. “Starting in more of a financial reporting role, moving up through financial analysis, controlling, and finally in the financial executive position that I enjoy here at Magnum.”
Magnum Systems: Past and Present
Magnum Systems is the fusion of two industry-leading companies - Taylor Products, a packaging machine manufacturer primarily servicing the agricultural industry, and Smoot Company, a pneumatic components manufacturer serving the bulk material pneumatic conveying industry. Both companies have over six decades of history providing top-tier products.
“Those two companies are about 60 years old and have a legacy of industry-leading products,” Bill explains. “The two companies got together in the early 2000s and spent most of the next 15 to 20 years as a stable combined company, continuing to provide industry-leading products.”
Born out of this merger of Taylor and Smoot, Magnum Systems has consistently upheld its reputation in the industry since the early 2000s, providing superior products for the pneumatic conveying, packaging and palletizing of pellets, powders, flakes or seeds.
Vision for the Future
The company was purchased by the first of many private equity sponsors in the mid-2000s. Despite maintaining stability and continuing to provide industry-leading products, the desired growth was just out of reach under its previous private equity sponsors. However, with the recent acquisition by 3 Rivers Capital, Magnum Systems anticipates rapid growth and expansion.
“We are looking to add to our product portfolio through acquisition,” says Bill. “Our intent is to add capabilities that we currently don't have to make us more of a complete material handling provider.”
They have also increased their operational footprint by 50% since the acquisition to continue producing world-class products and positioning Magnum as a comprehensive material handling provider.
The Magnum "Wow" Factor
At the heart of Magnum Systems' philosophy lies their ‘wow’ factor – the commitment to excel in every aspect of customer experience, from the initial contact to the final product delivery and installation. This concept encapsulates the entire customer experience, working diligently to amaze the customer at every step of the process. Magnum always aims to ‘wow’ customers with innovative engineering designs, meticulous manufacturing and efficient installation. It's all about ensuring the customer feels valued and satisfied with their investment.
“The company participates in most industries. We like to say anything that needs a pellet, powder, flake or seed moved; we can do it. We are a systems integrator that happens to manufacture two best-in-class products, and we want to bring the ‘wow’ factor to our customer,” Bill says. “So, we start out on the front end of the business where we bring bulk materials into a facility, and then typically we exit the back end of the business where we're mostly packaging things using automation.”
As Magnum Systems gears up for the future, the combined power of its expanded capabilities and an unwavering commitment to customer satisfaction set the stage for an exciting journey ahead. With an investment mindset ushered in by 3 Rivers Capital, the company is poised for significant growth and development in the years to come.
