Mastering the Basics of Pneumatic Conveying with K-State Olathe

It is vital for professionals in the manufacturing industry to stay current with the latest practices and techniques. K-State Olathe’s two-day course, the Basics of Pneumatic Conveying, delivered recently, was a prime opportunity for professionals to deepen their knowledge of one of the most widely used methods for transporting bulk solid materials. With a mix of expert instruction, practical demonstrations, and hands-on learning, this course was a well-rounded and engaging educational experience.

A Course Designed for Industry Professionals

Magnum Systems' Regional Sales Manager, Brad Schultz, teaching pneumatic conveying basics.Led by seasoned experts, including Jonathan McPherson, Todd Smith, and Magnum Regional Sales Manager Brad Schultz, the course takes a comprehensive look inside pneumatic conveying. Participants learned the fundamental principles, including the advantages and disadvantages of different conveying methods, the components involved in system design, and the specific applications for dilute-phase and dense-phase systems. According to Magnum’s Regional Sales Manager, Tyler Morerod, who attended the course, the instruction was thorough and approachable.

“Brad is very practical in all of his presentations,” Morerod shared. “He gives bits of complex information and breaks it down for most people to understand. He usually has a joke or two in his presentation as well, but he keeps you engaged and backs up his topics with his wealth of engineering expertise and 30+ years of industry knowledge.”

Hands-On Learning Takes Center Stage

Hands-on demonstrations held at Magnum Systems’ Test Lab in Lenexa, KansasA key highlight of the course is its hands-on demonstrations held at Magnum Systems’ Test Lab in Lenexa, Kansas. Each afternoon, participants observed pneumatic conveying methods in action, replicating real-world scenarios they might encounter in their own manufacturing facilities. These live demonstrations allowed attendees to see how different systems perform and what components are necessary for optimal operation.

“We were able to create real-life scenarios of what they might see in their plant and how the differing convey methods worked and operated,” said Morerod.

These practical elements were complemented by a scavenger hunt in which participants were asked to identify various system components, further reinforcing their understanding of the subject matter.

Interactive Exercises Elevate Learning

The sessions included group activities to encourage collaboration and problem-solving. Participants were given a specific product and application scenario and tasked with designing a convey system that addressed the outlined needs. Teams presented their solutions, showcasing what they had learned and applying their individual professional experience to the challenge.

According to Morerod, this activity was highly beneficial. “It was a great opportunity to think through the different questions we need to answer and the different pieces of information required to select the best convey type,” he said.

A Comprehensive and Engaging Experience

Hands-on demonstrations and monitoring held at Magnum Systems’ Test Lab in Lenexa, KansasFrom the balanced mix of slide presentations and videos to expert lectures and hands-on demonstrations, attendees found the course both engaging and educational. Morerod described the experience as “very well organized” and praised K-State Olathe for their dedication to bulk solids training.

“K-State Olathe is actually the only university in the country dedicated to bulk solids courses and related training,” he added. “They’re really putting together a good program with their bulk solids training and continuing education.”
